Year 10 Model UN
Thursday, 16 November 2023
On Tuesday 14 October, Year 10 students took part in a Model United Nations General Assembly simulation run for us by UN Youth Wellington.

During the first section of the day, students were divided into two groups representing ancient Rome and Parthia. They then had to work through a dispute between them, while trying to make sure their empire came out on top. Diplomacy in the ancient world was often not very diplomatic, and the fact that one of the ideas used by one side was to kidnap an Armenian princess and hold her to ransom, shows well that our students got fully into the spirit of the times.

For the main part of the day, small teams of students represented 19 different countries from around the world as those countries' representatives to the United Nations General Assembly. They debated a resolution relating to the question of global food chain sustainability, which contained a number of clauses. Students did a great job arguing for the way the country they were representing sees the issue rather than their own views on the topic.

It was a fully interactive experience, with students making alliances with like-minded countries, moving amendments to many of the clauses and then arguing the case for their country's perspective. We even had time to debate some fun amendments during the afternoon session.
