Exploring the Source: Year 5 & 6 Visit Kaitoke for Water Inquiry Unit
Thursday, 8 May 2025

As part of their Unit of Inquiry, "Why Water Is Essential for Sustaining Life," Year 5 & 6 students visited Kaitoke to learn first-hand how our water systems support life in Aotearoa. At the Kaitoke weir, students observed where Wellington's water is collected and discussed why it's vital to preserve water as a precious resource.

They discovered how water travels from the catchment through a filtration process before arriving in homes across the region. The visit also included exploration of Kaitoke Regional Park—a native rainforest teeming with life. Students learned how plants, birds, and insects are all interconnected in the food chain and gained a deeper understanding of ecosystems in action.

A highlight of the day was feeding the eels and learning about their incredible migration journey to Tonga—a fascinating example of nature's complexity and resilience. This trip not only deepened students' understanding of water as a life-sustaining resource but also connected them meaningfully with the natural environment.
