Over the school holidays, two of our Year 11 students, Varsha and Chloe, had the exciting opportunity to attend the University of Auckland's Women in Engineering (WIE) Holiday Camp. This three-day event brought together young women from across Aotearoa to explore the diverse and dynamic world of Engineering. The camp was designed to give students hands-on experience in various branches of Engineering, with activities linked to real-world challenges such as water filtration, hygiene, and transport systems. Participants not only worked through creative problem-solving tasks but also had the chance to interact with current University of Auckland Engineering students and recent graduates. "This provided an excellent insight into life in the Engineering field and what it's like studying at university," said Varsha. "They gave us some really helpful advice about what we should be focusing on now in our studies." A highlight for both students was an engaging design challenge where they created and 3D printed their own soap holders — and even made the soap to go in them! The WIE camp is aimed at encouraging more young women to consider Engineering as a future career pathway by giving them a taste of the possibilities the field offers. Varsha and Chloe returned feeling inspired and informed, with a clearer picture of what Engineering could look like for them. We're proud to see our students taking part in such valuable experiences and look forward to seeing where this inspiration might lead them next. |
