Textiles Students Inspired by Visit to Yu Mei Studio
Wednesday, 30 April 2025

Today our Year 11 and 12 Textiles Technology students had the exciting opportunity to visit the Yu Mei studio, accompanied by Head of Technology, Ms Sarah Wirth.

The visit was made even more special by the warm welcome they received from Yu Mei Founder and Director Jessie Wong — a Marsden Old Girl, 2024 Hall of Fame Laureate, and former student of Ms Wirth. It was a proud moment for teacher and alumna to reconnect, now on opposite sides of the industry: one guiding young learners, the other leading a successful luxury brand.

Jessie shared her journey from her school days at Marsden to leading one of Aotearoa's most celebrated fashion brands. Having just returned from China and the fashion weeks of New Zealand and Australia, Jessie spoke to the students about her recent experience filming Yu Mei's latest advertising campaign in Sydney and the dynamic pace of the fashion industry.

During the visit, students toured the studio, met members of the Yu Mei team, and learned about the diverse roles involved in the production process. A highlight of the day was a behind-the-scenes look at Yu Mei's yet-to-be-released collection, giving students a rare glimpse into the design and development of high-end handbags.

Jessie also spoke passionately about Yu Mei's commitment to sustainability — a core value embedded in the brand's philosophy and practice. Students came away with a deeper understanding of how thoughtful design and responsible production can go hand-in-hand in the world of fashion.

This experience offered an exciting real-world connection to the classroom, and a memorable chance to learn from one of our own. We are grateful to Jessie and the Yu Mei team for their time and generosity.
