Year 7 Zealandia Adventure
Friday, 11 April 2025

A stunning Wellington morning set the scene for our Year 7 trip to Zealandia on the final Thursday of Term 1. Students were greeted by the Zealandia education team, who guided them through an engaging session about the sanctuary's role in protecting native wildlife – particularly New Zealand's incredible birdlife.

As we explored the sanctuary, students spotted tīeke (saddlebacks), pīwakawaka (fantails), toutouwai (robins) and many tūī. The distinctive squawk of the kākā and a distant karearea (NZ falcon) added to the excitement. To top it off, four sunbathing tuatara made a special appearance – a rare and fascinating sight!

One student reflected on the experience: "My favourite thing at Zealandia was learning about the different animals and how they survive in the wildlife by themselves, and about the leaves and how they survive and a bit about them, like the toilet paper leaves, used in war to write letters and to use as toilet paper."

It was a fantastic morning of learning and connecting with the unique nature we're lucky to have right on our doorstep.
